Why Will Smith Kept It Clean

Why Will Smith Kept It Clean

When Will Smith entered the rap game as The Fresh Prince in the 1980s, he was one of the few artists who chose to keep his lyrics clean. In case you missed it, he was asked about that decision during a recent appearance of Late Night with Seth Meyers

Apparently Smith’s grandmother found his rap book when he was 12-years-old and it was infested with expletives. Instead of fussing, she left him a message in the back that read, “Dear Willard, truly intelligent people do not have to use words like this to express themselves. Please show the world that you’re as smart as we think you are. Love, Gigi.”

Will and his partner, DJ Jazzy Jeff, went on to win the first ever GRAMMY in the Best Rap Performance category for “Parents Just Don’t Understand” in 1989.
