“The Masked Singer” Returns!
FOX’s smash hit celebrity singing competition is back! Season three of “The Masked Singer” premiered right after the Super Bowl last night, with Nick Cannon returning as host, along with judges Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong and Nicole Scherzinger.
Things are running a little differently this time. Instead of 16 contestants like last season, there will be 18 this time, but we’ll meet them in three “mini-seasons.” First up was Group A: White Tiger, Turtle, Llama, Miss Monster, Robot and Kangaroo. Here’s what happened:
- First up was White Tiger, kicking things off strong with an Egyptian-themed performance of “Ice Ice Baby” by Vanilla Ice. He had the crowd on his feet, but the judges were stumped, guessing everyone from John Cena to Jason Momoa. Clue Review: Male, can rap, has stage fright, has a “giant career full of accomplishments,” references to getting “in the ring.”
- Next up was Turtle, and with amohawk! After White Tiger’s rap, Turtle brought the pipes with his rendition of “Kiss From A Rose’ by Seal… and provided a little fan service to the crowd, too. The judges thought he had to be a singer, guessing Zac Efron, Donny Walhberg, and Joey McIntyre. Clue Review: Male, great voice, started out his career “surrounded by other hungry newcomers,” wants to finally make a “big splash.”
- Then it was time for Llama, who brought the crowd to their feet with a whacky and fun rendition of “She Bangs” by Ricky Martin. So, he wasn’t serving vocals, but definitely laughs – especially with his sexy llama backup dancers! The judges were thinking he could be a comedian, or at least in entertainment, guessing David Spade and Joel McHale, among other funnymen. Clue Review: Male, not the best singer or dancer, big sense of humor, possibly a comedian.
- Next up was Miss Monster, joined onstage by her hype man, the debut season’s Monster character. She served up major vocals with a killer rendition of “Something To Talk About” by Bonnie Raitt. Some voices are unmistakable, but the judges couldn’t decide if she was Dolly Parton, Mary J. Blige or Dionne Warwick. Clue Review: Female, powerful voice, possibly older, started out as a “shy little monster,” feels “misunderstood.”
- Robot hit the stage next, serving up neither dance moves nor vocals to impress. The crowd had a great time during his performance of “Are You Gonna Go My Way” by Lenny Kravitz, but the judges were stumped. One thing was for sure, they weren’t guessing any singers, throwing out Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, and Floyd Mayweather.
- Then it was time for Kangaroo to wrap things up, bringing the house down – and to tears – with her powerful rendition of ‘Dancing On My Own” by Robyn. Kangaroo revealed that she had recently lost someone who held her family together, saying that she found herself in the spotlight for the wrong reasons after the tragedy… and now she’s ready to bounce back to stick it to the bullies. Her voice was beautiful, and the judges were guessing everyone from Jordin Sparks to Kelly Rowland. Clue Review: Female, great voice, considers herself a “survivor,” recently lost someone close to her family, found herself in the spotlight for the wrong reasons and wants to bounce back.
Then it was time to unmask someone from Group A. Robot got the least votes, so he was sent home – but not before judges got in their last guesses. Robot was ultimately revealed to be… Lil Wayne!
Season three is already off to a great start, but we’ll soon meet the characters in Groups B and C. Tune in to “The Masked Singer,” Wednesdays at 8pm ET on FOX.
