“The Masked Singer” Recap (10/9)
Last night, another star was revealed on Fox’s hit celebrity singing competition show, “The Masked Singer.” Hosted by Nick Cannon, a new crop stars are competing head-to-head in song in front of a live studio audience and a panel of celebrity judges: Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong and Nicole Scherzinger.
The thing is, the contestants are hidden in elaborate costumes – this week, the Penguin, Flower, Eagle and Fox faced off. Last week, the Panda was revealed to be late heavyweight champ Muhammed Ali’s daughter Laila Ali. Who will be unmasked next? Here’s what happened on last night’s episode:
- Kicking off the night’s performances was Flower. And wow, what a voice. She’s obviously a pro, based on those high notes! Her performance of “9 To 5” by Dolly Parton brought the judges and the audience to their feet. During her clue package, the Flower hinted that she has her finger in a bunch of pies, everything from cooking to clothing to crafts. She also made references to “Empire” and “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” The judges were thinking she had to be Patti LaBell or Jennifer Hudson based on her vocal chops, but Nicole thought she was an actress. Clue Review: Female, killer pipes, can hit the high notes, has her finger in many pies, loves makeup, relation to “Empire” and “What’s Love Got To Do With It?”
- Next up was the Eagle to face off with the Flower. He served up a comedic rendition of Meat Loaf’s “I’d Do Anything For Love.” His low voice was pretty good, but the judges were totally stumped on who it could be. Nicole thought his bandana could be a hint that he’s Bret Michaels, and Robin guessed Pauly Shore since he mentioned he lost a parent recently (Pauly’s mother died in April 2018). Clue Review: Male, okay voice, sense of humor, suffered a health scare, recently lost a parent, is a rockstar and hangs out with rockstars.
- Then Penguin hit the stage. Her voice wasn’t the strongest, but her attitude was. She served up a version of Zedd, Maren Morris and Grey’s mega-hit “The Middle.” The judges noted that she’s probably not a pro, but still gave her props for having fun on stage. Penguin hinted that she’s been told she’s “not pretty, smart or funny enough” her whole life, including by Hollywood casting directors and the press, but has enough confidence now to know she’s “not your secretary.” The judges were guessing everyone from Jenny’s cousin Melissa McCarthy to Kathy Griffin. Clue Review: Female, probably not a professional singer, has been bullied, has a score to settle with a Hollywood casting director and the press.
- Closing out the night was the Fox, who the judges have been dying to unmask. He owned the stage during his performance of Maroon 5’s “This Love,” so the judges are thinking he’s a professional performer. But when Fox hinted at his “onscreen superhero,” Nicole guessed that he could be Anthonie Mackie. Other guesses include Wesley Snipes, Leslie Odom Jr and Jamie Foxx. Clue Review: Male, great voice, natural performer, has lived two different lives – one of them being a superhero, he does his best work at night.
Then it was time for a smackdown between the bottom two performers: Eagle and Penguin. Eagle did a fun version of “These Boots Are Made For Walkin’” by Nancy Sinatra, and Penguin strutted her stuff with Fifth Harmony’s “Worth It.”
Penguin came out the winner, which meant it was Eagle who was next to get unmasked – and the judges were way off with their guesses. Eagle was revealed to be… Dr. Drew Pinsky, host of “Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew!”
See who gets unmasked next week on “The Masked Singer,” which airs Wednesdays at 8pm on Fox!
