“The Masked Singer” Recap – (10/2)
Last night, another star was revealed on Fox’s hit celebrity singing competition show, “The Masked Singer.” Hosted by Nick Cannon, a new crop stars are competing head-to-head in song in front of a live studio audience and a panel of celebrity judges: Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong and Nicole Scherzinger.
The thing is, the contestants are hidden in elaborate costumes – the Butterfly, Black Widow, Leopard, Thingamajig, Skeleton, Flamingo, Ladybug, Panda, Rottweiler and Tree. Last week, the Egg and Ice Cream were revealed to be ice skater Johnny Weir and pro-gamer Tyler “Ninja” Blevins.
- First up was the Black Widow – and it turns out she’s as flexible as her vocal range. Seriously, she hit all the right notes and poses during her performance of “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” by Whitney Houston, and the judges were blown away. As for the clues? She mentioned “director’s cut” a few times, talked about living in the public eye, and welcomed the judges to her “edgier and darker” “empire.” The judges were thinking she could be Yvette Nicole Brown or Sherri Shepherd, and Jenny guessed Amber Riley. Clue Review: Female, great voice, flexible, lived in the public eye, is summoning a new, edgier era, relation to peaches, a crown, and crystal balls.
- Then it was time for the Leopard to face off against Black Widow. The judges were sure the celeb in disguise was female based on their Royal-worthy gown and being hounded by headlines about what they’re wearing. That is, until they started singing – with a distinctly male voice! And what a voice, he hit all the high and low notes perfectly while singing “Somebody To Love” by Queen. With hints like a headline reading “out of hits and out of time,” and the phrases “catch me” and “heavy hitter” thrown in, the judges were thinking he could be an athlete… but once they heard his voice, they changed it up. Big names like Billy Porter, Jamie Foxx and Robbie Williams were thrown around. Despite a killer performance, the Black Widow won this round. Clue Review: Male, great voice, possibly involved in sports, has been hounded by the press, wants to turn over a new leaf.
- Next up was Flamingo, who might be a YouTuber based on the fact that she straight-up said she has a “ZooTube” channel. She dropped all kinds of hints, like wanting to “show her feathers again” after feeling “trapped in her career” and going away for a while. Based on her clues about beauty and fashion, the judges were thinking she could be a Kardashian or famous YouTuber, but once she started killing it singing “Sucker” by the Jonas Brothers, they started leaning towards actual singers. Maybe a member of Destiny’s Child? Clue Review: Female, has a “zootube” channel, loves beauty and makeup, felt trapped in her career and took a break, wants to make a comeback, good singing voice.
- Then it was Panda’s turn to face off against the Flamingo. Panda probably isn’t a professional singer, based on her performance and also the fact that she’s shy. But she did her best, and the judges enjoyed the performance of “Stronger” by Kelly Clarkson. Panda’s clue package was presented as a loving letter to her dad, and said that she comes from “the greatest family in the forest.” Judges had a hunch she could be an athlete like Venus Williams, but Ken also threw in Martha Stewart. The Flamingo won the round, meaning the Panda was moving on to go against the Leopard. Clue Review: Female, shy but fierce, okay voice, loves her dad, comes from a notable family, possibly involved in sports.
So, the final two faced off. Leopard dished out a purrr-fect rendition of “Respect” by Aretha Franklin, and Panda showed that fierce side she was talking about with “All I Do Is Win” by T-Pain and DJ Khaled. Then, it was time for the unmasking. Panda was the one voted home, and was revealed to be… Laila Ali, daughter of late heavyweight champ Muhammed Ali! Ken was shocked – he had guessed Laila correctly, but only “as a joke.”
What a reveal! Ali said she was “humbled” by the unique experience on the show. Leopard will sing another day, so stay tuned next week! “The Masked Singer” airs Wednesday nights at 8pm ET on Fox.
