“The Masked Singer 2” – Season Premiere Recap (9/25)
Fox’s hit new singing competition show, “The Masked Singer,” came back for its second-ever season last night. Hosted by Nick Cannon, a new crop of undercover stars are competing head-to-head in song in front of a live studio audience and a panel of celeb judges: Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy, Ken Jeong and Nicole Scherzinger. The thing is, the contestants are all in elaborate costumes – this time, the Egg, Butterfly, Thingamajig, Skeleton, Ladybug, Ice Cream, Rottweiler, and Tree.
With their true identity up for the judges and viewers to guess – we are given hints/clues.The true identity of the masked celebrities are revealed when they’re eliminated. Here are this season’s “masked singers”:
- The Butterfly kicked off the show, singing “Bang Bang” by Ariana Grande, Jessie J and Nici Minaj. The clues were a little vague, but the biggest was probably that they somehow hail from London but has a Southern accent. There were also references to a photo shoot, and that she’s been in hiding… she shouldn’t be, because her voice was on fire. The judges were guessing everything from Cara Delevingne to Fantasia to Diana Ross, and fans think it could be Michelle Williams from Destiny’s Child. Clue review: Female, has been in hiding, has gone through a major change, “terrified by the one place I used to call home,” possibly from London, has posed in some kind of photo shoot.
- The Egg was up next, competing with a rendition of “Just Dance” by Lady Gaga. The judges immediately got a “fabulous” vibe from the performance, plus Egg was decked out in tons of sparkles. Judges were thinking he could be a number of fashion-conscious stars, like “Queer Eye’s” Jonathan Van Ness or figure skater Johnny Weir. The performance was fun and the hidden celeb showed off their vocal flair, however auto-tuned their voice was. Unfortunately, he couldn’t top Butterfly’s pipes. Clue review: Male, decent voice, fabulous and used to wearing sparkles, some connection to a crystal ball and swans, possibly in sports.
- The Thingamajig hit the stage next, singing “Easy” by The Commodores. He had a good voice, but probably isn’t used to using it… but the most notable clue was how tall he is. The judges were immediately guessing sports stars like Michael Strahan, Kareem Abdul-Jabar, and Dennis Rodman. Clue review: Male, not a professional singer, tall, references to magic, sneakers, fashion shoots, and the number 4.
- The Skeleton was up next to face off with the Thingamajig, with an epic mashup of “Rapper’s Delight” by Sugarhill Gang and “Good Times” by Chic. He totally stole the show, personality wise but also with his versatile voice – he easily won over Thingamajig. After a few clues suggesting he’s a comedian, the judges guessed Martin Short and Dana Carvey. Clue review: Male, can sing and rap, “used to playing second fiddle,” relation to the number “4261,” used the phrase “party on!”
- The Ladybug was next, singing “Holding Out For A Hero” by Bonnie Tyler. Her voice was pretty good, but the judges were having a hard time guessing if she was on the younger or older side. So far, we know she’s from a famous family, so judges were throwing around guesses of everyone from Lindsay Lohan to Jamie Lynn Spears to Willow Smith… Ladybug was not happy about Ken’s LiLo guess. Clue review: Female, mature voice but could be young, born into a famous family, used to drama and being dogged by the media, relation to baseball hats, pumpkins, dogs… and didn’t like being compared to Lindsay Lohan.
- Then it was Rottweiler’s turn to face off, singing “Maneater” by Hall and Oates. Judges immediately got the impression that he’s a football player, but he had some gorgeous pipes that suggested he’s actually a singer. The judges suggested he could be a member of NSYNC or The Backstreet Boys… or maybe even Bruno Mars? Clue review: Male, relation to “Friday Night Lights” but maybe not an athlete, great voice, can rock some choreography.
- Next up was the Tree, definitely one of the more unique costumes of the season. She was decked out in Christmas vibes and delivered a solid rendition of “High Hopes” by Panic! At The Disco – and she could reach the high notes! Judges were all over the place with the guesses – they threw in everyone from Rachael Ray to Zooey Deschanel to Wendi McLendon-Covey from “The Goldbergs.” Clue Review: Female, decent voice that can reach some high notes, it was her first live performance, references to cooking, being on TV, jazz music and the holidays.
- Finally, it was time for Ice Cream! He had a distinct look, very tall and lean and had a great stage presence. His clues had a lot to do with money and emojis, so judges guessed that he’s some kind of digital-savvy star. He did an okay version of “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus, a viral hit that just further proved he’s probably an internet celeb. The judges guessed some DJs, like Diplo and Calvin Harris… and even Snapchat founder Evan Spiegel. Clue Review: Male, not a great voice, makes a lot of money, performs for millions, relation to karate, family doubted his passion could be a job.
