Hershey’s Faces Backlash Over Changed Christmas Kisses Bell Commercial

Hershey’s Faces Backlash Over Changed Christmas Kisses Bell Commercial

Every Christmas, since 1989, we’ve seen the iconic Hershey’s Kisses in a simple commercial where the are bells playing “We Wish You A Merry Christmas.”

For 2020, Hershey’s has changed it up and the internet has melted down over it. In the new version, the kisses start play the song, then a little girl’s hand reaches and takes one. The shot moves to the girl and her dad making Christmas cookies. Peanut butter blossoms to be precise.

The comments have been flooding ever since, suggesting the dad and daughter be part of another commercial and not the long running one. Some of the comments were:

  • “The perfect representation of 2020: completely ruined!”
  • “Look forward to original every year. Why change it? Don’t ruin it just make a separate commercial”
  • “Hershey’s redoing their Christmas commercial is personally the last straw of 2020 for me. I simply cannot go on without hearing the little Hershey kiss sigh after the performance of his lifetime.”
  • “Hershey Kisses have changed their Christmas commercial. Truly 2020 is the worst year ever.”

The company responded to some comments, saying they’d share the anger. Then, they released a statement saying “We made the decision to make a slight update to the original that kept the opening holiday melodies and incorporated another holiday tradition, baking — melding together these two time-honored traditions,” the statement read. “From playing the bells to baking peanut butter blossoms, it’s Hershey’s Kisses that have stood the test of time.”

Hershey’s also notes the original commercial is still here, and ran until November 23. The bell ad is the longest running Hershey’s ad for the company.

Change in 2020, is probably not a good idea. Maybe the company will bow to public pressure and run both ads.
