Eddie Murphy Returns To “Saturday Night Live”
Eddie Murphy made his triumphant return to “Saturday Night Live” this weekend. The episode – which also featured Lizzo debuting as a musical guest – was easily the most anticipated of the season, and he did NOT disappoint.
During the monologue, Eddie joked about one of his comedic idols. “I just had a new baby just about a year ago,” he said. “That means I have 10 kids now. My kids are actually pretty much my whole life now, and if you would have told me 30 years ago that I would be this boring, stay-at-home dad and Bill Cosby would be in jail, even I would have taken that bet.”
Eddie was also joined by several of his comedic protégés and colleagues. Tracy Morgan, Dave Chappelle, and Chris Rock all had the same question for him – did he get the sketches they wrote for him? When Dave said, “Now you’re looking at half of Netflix’s budget,” Tracy quipped that he made all his millions on the road. Eddie was like, “You mean touring?” to which Tracy replied, “No, I got hit by a truck,” a reference to is 2014 accident.
Eddie brought back several of his iconic characters – Buckwheat, Velvet Jones, Gumby, and Mister Robinson, who taught the kids about gentrification. But his return wouldn’t have been complete without something new to prove that he still has the comedic chops to turn an episode around. The best one was when he played an elf named Kiddle Diddles being interviewed after a tragedy at Santa’s workshop.
- ONE MORE THING! It was announced that Adam Driver would be hosting the first episode of 2020 on January 25th, with Halsey doing musical guest duty.
